Lake Amory, sandwiched between Sanford and Lake Mary in unincorporated Seminole County, is very much like many urban and suburban lakes in Florida.
Overly-rich in nutrients, the 10-acre lake became choked with invasive plants that so clogged the water that boating and even fishing became impossible.
But thanks to the work of dedicated neighbors and the Seminole County Commission, Lake Amory is coming back to life.
Over a period of three years, residents, the county and the adjacent golf course have worked to cut back on nutrients reaching the lake from runoff from the golf course and yards, to remove invasive, exotic plants and to establish native plants along the shoreline and in shallow areas of the lake.
By an overwhelming majority, homeowners on the lake also voted to tax themselves to pay for monthly herbicide treatment of exotic plants and to have sterile carp introduced into the lake to keep hydrilla and other invasives under control.
